Our daughter, Reign Miley Fernando, is just 1 year old, but she has already faced more challenges than most do in a lifetime. At 8 months old, doctors discovered a heart murmur, and after several tests, we received the devastating diagnosis—Congenital Heart Disease, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Subpulmonic, and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).
As parents, nothing prepares you for hearing that your baby has a serious heart condition. Since that day, our lives have been filled with hospital visits, tests, and prayers. Each time we look at Reign, we see a brave little girl who loves to smile, despite the struggles her tiny heart faces every day. We want nothing more than to see her grow up healthy, to run and play like any other child. But without medical intervention, her condition could worsen.
We live in Brgy. Bulak, Gapan City, Nueva Ecija, and we are blessed with two wonderful children. My husband is a hardworking farmer, and he is the sole provider for our family. Despite his hard work, our income is only enough for daily needs. The cost of Reign’s medical care is beyond what we can afford, and as much as we try, we cannot gather the amount needed for her treatment.

What Is Ventricular Septal Defect?
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) happens during pregnancy if the wall that forms between the two ventricles does not fully develop. This leaves a hole.
In babies without a heart defect, the right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs. The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. In babies with a VSD, blood flows from the left ventricle through the VSD to the right ventricle and into the lungs.
PROBABILITY
About 42 of every 10,000 babies in the United States are born with a VSD.
TREATMENT
Depending on the size of the hole, symptoms, and general health of the child, the doctor might recommend either cardiac catheterization or open-heart surgery. These procedures will close the hole and restore normal blood flow. After surgery, the doctor will set up regular follow-up visits to make sure that the VSD remains closed.
