Cushman & Wakefield fundraiser for MTM Dragonboat Team Cup

Cushman & Wakefield is taking part in the MTM Dragonboat Team Cup Challenge Championship 2023.

This year, Habitat for Humanity Singapore has been identified as the official charity partner for the event. Funds raised will go towards Habitat Singapore's work of providing safe and sanitary homes to vulnerable elderly and low-income families.

Habitat for Humanity Singapore is part of an international Christian housing charity that seeks to eliminate poverty housing worldwide. Convicted that safe and affordable housing provides a path out of poverty, we have been working alongside low-income communities to increase their access to improved living conditions. Since 2004, Habitat Singapore regularly sends volunteer teams to build decent and affordable houses across Asia-Pacific. Locally, we provide intensive home-cleaning for vulnerable individuals and families so they can have a safe & sanitary place to call home.

Located just an hour from Singapore by ferry, Batam is the largest city in the province of Riau Islands, Indonesia, with a population of close to 1.2 million people (as of 2020).

Although Batam has been rapidly developing since 1970s, Batam is not problem free. The living situation of low-income families is apparent from their housing conditions. The house structure is unsafe, with walls only from thin plywoods. The floor is mostly dirt, and the toilets/latrines are improper. Many homes lack clean water access.

To date, with the help of wonderful organisations such as MTM, Habitat has provided 1,648 new safe and decent houses (new house and repair), clean water access to 945 households, and secure tenure for 10 households.

As part of the strategic building plan, Habitat for Humanity Batam aims to improve the standard of living for 1,000 families through the reconstruction of new homes, improving the current water, drainage and electricity system.

Teams will join the current stage of house construction that they’re assigned to. This could range from the early phase of laying the foundation or adding the finishing touches to the house. No previous house-building experience is needed as volunteers on-site will be guided by seasoned Habitat construction staff. The building process will also be broken down into simple tasks that anyone can do.
