Help 1 Year Old Raenelle with End Stage Liver Disease.
My name is Vicky and i am helping Our daughter Raenelle Wong to raise funds for her treatments and surgeries.
Our Daughter Raenelle has just turned 1 year old. She unfortunately was diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease recently and this was escalated from her condition called Biliary Atresia.
Biliary atresia is a condition in infants in which the bile ducts outside and inside the liver are scarred and blocked. Bile can't flow into the intestine, so bile builds up in the liver and damages it. The damage leads to scarring, loss of liver tissue and function, and cirrhosis.
She did a major surgery Kasai portoenterostomy in KK Children's Hospital when she was just 1.5 months old. She was admitted for the surgery just 2 days after diagnosing with Biliary Atresia. This has to be done early so that it can help alleviate her condition, we were completely shocked and heartbroken that our baby girl had to be operated then.

Fast Forward with her healing from her Surgery, she was on medication and constant follow up with the doctors in KK Children Hospital. She was still yellow and jaundice levels has climbed up to high levels. It means that the Surgery did not work out for her. In late August, we noticed apart from her increasing distended tummy and difficulty in breathing, she seemed to be swollen in her hands and legs, her eyelids swell up, that prompted us to bring her to A&E. She was then admitted for close monitoring with tests and transfusion done. We had a discussion with the doctors and we decided to have her referred to National University Hospital.
Healed scar from Kasai surgery and gradual swelling all round while we thought she was just growing too well.
Upon our 1st Consultation in NUH in early September, Raenelle had to be admitted again as we told the doctors that we notice bleeding in her stools. After a series of tests and scans, we were told of the bad news, that her liver has deteriorated and it is not functioning as it should. The liver is no longer capable of producing a protein that why has ascites and she was swollen from water retention. She requires protein transfusion every 2 weeks to help her body function. Apart from that, her heart is also starting to get affected and working hard. We were then advised by the doctors that the only option for her now is to go for a Liver Transplant as soon as possible. The Doctors and Transplant coordinator did not hesitate and quickly arranged for daddy to go for suitability test and CT scan. Unfortunately he was not a match and i am not a suitable donor.
We checked with the docs if she was well enough after treatment to discharge for a few days as it was her Birthday weekend, we could not bear for her to stay in.
As Raenelle goes for a return protein Transfusion the following week, we were actually scheduled for variceal banding via endoscope to help any varices bleeding. It was then cancelled as she was still swelling and the band was to huge a fit for her. And again the doctors advised us to get her transplanted asap. We had listed her into deceased donor waiting list, but in Singapore’s context, the possibility for her to get the liver soon is close to zero. Right now, we are desperately looking for a Living Liver Donor to help our child. We have put up the public appeal in our social Media accounts.
Our other concern now is the cost of treatments, examinations, pre and post-Surgery. Raenelle had been in and out of hospital and consultation visits. She is on long term medication and prescribed formula milk, we have been coping with it for a while now. Currently all our expenses lies solely on a working daddy, and we cannot imagine how we could afford Raenelle's current and future medical bills.
All cost of the Pre and post transplant for both our Daughter and Donor will be borne by us. It is estimated to be $5,000 per donor to go for suitability tests, and we are unsure when a suitable confirmed donor will come around. Our main priority still remains to be finding a suitable donor first, as our daughter could no longer wait.
The Transplant Surgeries cost is hefty and the estimates given shocked us even more at an already subsidised rates for Singaporean / Permanent Resident. We would like to call out now for all kind souls to donate for Raenelle’s treatment and Surgeries. A little goes a long way and every single contribution helps.
For Raenelle as a recipient estimated max cost after subsidy ( $8000 - Investigations + $50,000 - Liver transplant ) = $58,000
For the Donor
Max cost for Investigation after subsidy ( $5000 investigation x 5 pax of volunteer donor going for test) =$25,000
Max cost for transplant after subsidy : $15,000
Total: $58,000 + $25,000 +$15,000 = $98,000
