Help Althea Fight Heart Disease!

In the small, sunlit corner of our humble home, where the laughter of my daughter Althea Claire often echoes, there lies a palpable shadow that lingers—a reminder of the silent battle she faces each day. Althea, with her bright eyes and infectious smile, was born with a congenital heart defect known as a Perimembranous to Inlet Ventricular Septal Defect. From the moment of her diagnosis, our lives have been a series of highs and lows, threaded together by hope and relentless worry.
Althea is now four years old. Her spirit is undeterred by her condition, but as her mother, I see the unspoken challenges she endures. Every giggle and sprint strains her little heart, and every night, I lay awake fearing the worst. The doctors have been clear; without surgery, Althea's future is uncertain. But with it, she could have the chance to live a full and vibrant life, just like any other child.

My husband is the sole breadwinner of our family. He works tirelessly, often taking on multiple jobs to ensure that we meet our basic needs. Yet, despite his hard work, we are often left choosing between immediate necessities and saving for Althea’s much-needed heart surgery. It's a choice no parent should ever have to make.
We've cut corners wherever possible, but the cost of healthcare far exceeds what we can manage alone. It is with a heavy but hopeful heart that I reach out to you today through this story. We are seeking your help to secure the future for Althea Claire—a future filled not with hospital visits and medical uncertainties, but with dreams, possibilities, and the simple joy of a healthy life.
Any contribution, big or small, can help us move closer to our goal: a successful surgery for Althea. Your support could bridge the gap between her today and her healthier tomorrow. We are grateful for every prayer, every share of our story, and every donation that brings us a step closer to seeing Althea grow up strong and fearless, as every child deserves.

All funds raised will be managed by Give.asia and pay directly to the hospital.

With sincere gratitude,

Vivian Layugan

What Is Ventricular Septal Defect?
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) happens during pregnancy if the wall that forms between the two ventricles does not fully develop. This leaves a hole. In babies without a heart defect, the right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs. The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. In babies with a VSD, blood flows from the left ventricle through the VSD to the right ventricle and into the lungs.

PROBABILITY
About 42 of every 10,000 babies in the United States are born with a VSD.

TREATMENT
Depending on the size of the hole, symptoms, and general health of the child, the doctor might recommend either cardiac catheterization or open-heart surgery. These procedures will close the hole and restore normal blood flow. After surgery, the doctor will set up regular follow-up visits to make sure that the VSD remains closed.
This Campaign uses Boosting
