Help our migrant worker Selvakumar's family go beyond this difficult period

"No parting words, no precursor." Life is short!

Selvakumar has given 14 years to Singapore. Let's help however we can for his family.

After the usual evening laughter and chit-chats, Selvakumar collapsed outside the dormitory bathroom and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on 10 May 2020, from coronary thrombosis. No parting words, no precursor. His family members and dorm-mates still could not believed that a healthy and fully functioning Rajendran is now gone, just like that.

Rajendran Selvakumar, 38, has been working in Singapore as a construction worker for the past 14 years. His dorm-mates describe him as a cheerful friend and diligent worker, who leads an active and healthy lifestyle. His last medical check-up in 2019 did not reveal any pre-existing conditions.

Selvakumar came to Singapore with a dream to provide the best for his family. Apart from spending on food and phone cards, rest of his income is remitted home to support his wife, aged father, and two lovely daughters (aged 12 and 4). He always insisted that Sharsida and Atchaya get the best education possible, so they could afford a better standard of living than their father could. Now the burden of supporting the family falls solely on the shoulders of his homemaker wife Makeshwari, who has low BP and requires regular follows up and medications.
The couple got married 12 years ago and June 13 is their 12th wedding anniversary. Selvakumar is a very homely person and he will call home twice daily.
May 9 is the last time he called home to his wife and kids. The family is still in a shock as they couldn't accept his sudden death. Maheshwari is worried about financial expenses even for basic needs.
Only the eldest daughter is aware of his father's demise. The second daughter 4-year old has been asking why her father has not called and talked to her. Maheshwari can only cry helplessly.

There has been a spate of deaths from coronary thrombosis amongst our migrant workers community lately. Every single one of these lives lost is a precious and irreplaceable soul gone too soon. In Selvakumar’s case, we lost a dutiful father and son, a loving husband, a kindred brother, and a nation-building hero unspoken of until now.

His migrant worker brothers gave out whatever little they have and pooled together a month worth of his salary for his family. We sincerely hope you would carry Selvakumar’s in your thoughts and prayers.

All donations raised will be made direct to the widow.
Through the Itsrainingraincoat organization, arrangements have been made for a dedicated liaison person to speak with the family and work with the local banks to ensure that the money is received and distributed in a sustainable manner.
