What is Ride for Rations?
Organised by Bike Aid (Singapore), Ride for Rations (RfR) is a ground-up fundraising initiative where participants embark on non-competitive long-distance cycling to raise awareness of hunger in Singapore. Beyond the fundraising, it also involves the coordination and distribution of the rations on a monthly basis at various estates.
The 2024 edition – the 14th in the series - will primarily centre on the original Melaka-Singapore edition. While we will have the virtual edition with participants attempting to cover a distance of 200km, 580km, or 1,000km over the month of September, it is only open to past RfR participants; those who have been involved in RfR activities such as ration distributions; and, or undertaking RfR fundraising.
The Melaka-Singapore ride, which was the norm prior to 2020, involves 2 days of cycling: 103 km from Melaka to Batu Pahat and thereafter another 142 km from Batu Pahat to Singapore.
The virtual edition is “Strava-based”, and the cycling distances are tracked on the app. Initiated in 2020, it was to help sustain our effort in providing for the less-privileged during the pandemic where participants continued to raise funds as they cycled individually or in groups, indoors or outdoors. It has been kept thereafter to facilitate fundraising by those who cannot partake in the Melaka-Singapore ride.
Participants of both editions must raise a minimum of SGD500/-.

Who are the beneficiaries of Ride for Rations?
This year, RfR is aiming to raise funds to cover 12 months of monthly dried food rations for at least 580 households and at least 200 breakfast sets for school-going children.
Each set of food rations costs $75 and includes essentials such as eggs, fruits, milk powder and staples such as rice and oil. Each breakfast set costs $30 and consists of Milo, cornflakes and UHT milk.
The beneficiaries of RfR are identified by the registered charity Sunlove Abode for Intellectually Infirmed Ltd, a registered charity with IPC status. Sunlove is also the custodian of the funds.
Most of the beneficiaries live in 1-room rental flats in Bukit Merah, Chai Chee, Depot, Hougang, Serangoon, Marsiling, Whampoa and Woodlands. They include:
• the elderly with no children or whose children are not supporting them
• single parents
• those suffering from medical and intellectual infirmities
• those who have no reliable sources of income
• families that require financial help to cover rental, conservancy, electricity and basic food expenses
