Help us share
the simple pleasure of cycling with kids who cannot see well enough to ride a
bicycle on their own.
Hello, we are a group of avid cyclists living here in Chiang Mai. The members of the group have been cycling together for many years now.
One of them Greg, used to be a member of a group known as “The Blind Stokers Club” in San Diego, California. This is a group of people who ride tandem (bicycle built for two) bicycles. On a tandem bicycle, the front person is called the “Captain” and the person on the back is called the “Stoker”.
This group in San Diego makes connections between people who own tandem bicycles and people who are blind. Many of these blind people have never experienced the bliss of travelling at speed through the wind and space on a bicycle. But because they are now riding with a person who is guiding them on a tandem bicycle, they are able to experience the joy and freedom of bike riding.
Greg and the other members of this group hope to replicate the same experience for the blind community in Chiang Mai, to give them the opportunity to get out into the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful experience of riding bicycles. We plan to kick-start the initiative for the School of the Blind in Chiang Mai and the targeted date for the first ride is mid May 2017. This initiative will eventually roll out to the entire blind community in Chiang Mai.
Our target is to raise at least S$10,000 to purchase 5 tandem bicycles, helmets, gloves and safety vests for the “Stokers”.
A Facebook page has been set-up where we will post the riding activities and updates once the initiative has kicked off. Meanwhile, we have posted some pictures/videos of the few rides that we have taken which you can view.
