Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade 2017: Alpha & Omega

Supporting The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home’s Programmes for Patients with Dementia and Beyond Social Services Programmes for Youths at Risk

Come 9 to 11 June 2017, up to 130 cycling enthusiasts will once again set foot in Malaysia for a good cause.  We will start our ride on Saturday 10 June in the town of Kuantan and make an arduous 150 km journey before ending for the night in Lanjut. The long and winding road along the beautiful east coast of Malaysia with a potential persistent headwind will test the wills of the cyclists.  After a good night’s rest enjoying the tranquillity at a golf resort, the cyclists will continue their journey for another 150 km to the town of Tanjong Leman.  Today will test the legs with continuous rolling hills along palm oil plantation.  The journey will tax the mental and physical resolves of the cyclists to the max!

What’s New! For the first time in Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade’s history, on 3 September 2017 we challenge the youths from Beyond Social Services to blade the equivalent distance ridden by the cyclists in June.  This will take place as a relay at East Coast Park.  This will re-introduce the bladers in the spirit of the original Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade.  More importantly, the youths will see how they are an important part of society and whatever their situations may be, they can make a huge impact through their efforts.

The organising committee aims to raise S$500,000 for the beneficiaries by rallying all participants to raise funds – through the support garnered for their participation – from their peers and acquiring the support of corporate organisations for donations.

10 Years Of Giving Back

Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade began in 2005 with the simple idea that a group of passionate people collectively participating in the sport they deeply love can be a powerful vehicle to provide help to those who need it.  Charity Bike ‘n’ Blade 2017 continues this tradition this year.

9 editions of Charity Bike and Blade has been held from 2005 to 2016, with more than 5 million dollars raised for various beneficiaries, including St. Andrew’s Community Hospital, St Luke’s ElderCare, St Luke’s Hospital, PERTAPIS Centre for Women and Girls, Ling Kwang Youth Centre, The Salvation Army Gracehaven, and The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home.

This event is organised and supported fully by volunteers and has attracted participants and support crew from all walks of life – students, working professionals and retirees.  The event raised funds for the elderly sick and youth-at-risk, and in the process increased public awareness for the various causes.

Causes For This Year’s Ride

The Salvation Army Peacehaven Nursing Home

In Singapore, 6.2% of people aged 65 years and above are diagnosed with dementia. Dementia is a general term used to describe a range of symptoms, as opposed to a single condition, associated to a decline in mental ability, and severe enough to interfere in one’s daily life.

Out of the 14 Resident Living Areas (RLAs) in Peacehaven, eight of them are specially allocated for persons afflicted with dementia, and this accounts for 60% of the total resident population. Funds raised would go towards the following purposes:

  • Converting and renovating current facilities to be more dementia-friendly and safe
  • Furnishing, setting up and repainting RLAs so that a greater variety of activities can be offered
  • Installing tracking devices in the RLAs to prevent accidents, such as falls

Beyond Social Services

Beyond Social Services (BSS) help children and youths from less privileged backgrounds to break away from the poverty cycle. BSS provide guidance, care and resources that enable families and communities to keep their young people in school and out of trouble.  BSS want to develop young people who respect the law, value education and seek to become responsible adults.

BSS are currently operating in 5 public rental housing areas with a view of facilitating mutual help and a strong community spirit among residents. BSS believe that when more residents begin looking out for each other, their efforts will go some way in creating neighbourhoods where children and youths are resilient against negative influences.

So far, BSS have reached out to 44 housing blocks and are in touch with 6,808 young people below 20 years old.   In these neighbourhoods, BSS nurture   a sense of belonging among children and youths so they do not feel the need to turn to negative influences. BSS also create a culture of learning through educational and development programmes and link their caregivers to job and training opportunities.
