My daughter, Nabila, is 5 years old and she’s suffering from Biliary Artesia. Biliary atresia is a disease of the bile ducts that affects only infants. Bile is a digestive liquid that is made in the liver. It travels through the bile ducts to the small intestine, where it helps digest fats.

In biliary atresia, the bile ducts become inflamed and blocked soon after birth. This causes bile to remain in the liver, where it starts to destroy liver cells rapidly and cause cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver.

She has been living with that ever since birth, but things had become complicated recently, and as we speak, she’s been in the hospital for the last 15 days, and we’re even not sure when can she be discharged or what’s the next diagnosis, as the hospital is still trying to come up with a solution, and if all else fail, she’ll be going for transplant. During her stay in hospital, she’s also suffering from jaundice at a level of 140, which is quite dangerous.

My family, is what to many as working poor! I have 4 children, 3 boys and Nabila is the only daughter, with my husband as the sole bread winner in the family with a salary of $2700, which actually disqualified us of getting grants and subsidies. The latest help we’ve received are from SSO, with only $150 per month, after we’ve appeal for so many time…

Imagine feeding a family of 6 with only $2700 (before CPF deduction) and $150! We’re staying in a 1 room rental flat in Tampines.

Sometime, I wish we could be making lesser money, so we might be able to get more subsidy from the government, and I felt our system are usually gear to help those really poor, and cases like us, falls through the gap, neither here nor there.

My expenses had been piling up tremendously, and I’ve been try to seek help to raise bus fare and was rejected too.

We’re at our wits end, and I’m seeking help from the general public to help us, and we’re even chase by the hospital to pay Nabila’s medical bills…

Thank you for reading this, and I really hope someone could come forward to help us.

Sincerely yours,

Fizah
